About Sri Kamakala Kameswarar Temple

The Pradhana murthys of this ancient temple are Lord Kameswarar and his consort Goddess Kameswari. The Moolavar is in the form of a Swetha Bhana Lingam , a rarity in this regions and the Goddess has a Tribhangi Swarupam- again a very rare form of sculpture in this part of the vindhyas.The Goddess reigns supreme through her Ardha Meru and Sri Chakram. The other deities include Lord Ganesh, Lord Subramanya, Lord Iyyappan, Lord Hanuman and Utsavam Murthy- Lord Rama with his consort Sita , Hanuman and Brother Lakhsmana.It is believed that King Chatrapathi Shivaji had once visited this temple. The Moolavar vimans are made of Granite structures, indicating that the temple is very ancient. It shdould be more than 700- 800 years old.Goddess Durga is also present in the temple. A number of devotees throng the temples on Tuesday afternoons for the Rahu Kala Prayers, believed to ward off evils and bring prosperity to those who offer prayers.The temple is visited by devotees from far and wide.
The Temple's New Rajagopuram was constructed and rajagopuram consecration (kumbabhisekham) happened in the year 1994. A number of renovation works have been carried out subsequently. The Temples celebrates a number of festivals throug out the year - Brahmotsavam , Vasantotsavam,Vaikasi Vishakam,Aani Thirumanjanam for Lord Nataraja, Aadi Puram, Pavithrotsavam, Annabhisekam, Kartigai Deepam,Arudra Darisanam to name a few.The Soora samharam utsavam held at the conclusion of Skanda Sashti must visit in this part of the world. This happens after Diwali.
There is a good participation in all the utsavams by devotees and the Sri Padams are very active in the day to day activities of the temple,be it doing cleaning work at regular intervals or participating in the festivities.
